Science Based Targets initiative validation

Marston Holdings achieves

Science Based Targets initiative validation

A major milestone in our sustainability journey

We are proud to announce that our carbon reduction targets have been formally validated by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi), a globally recognised organisation that helps businesses align emissions reduction targets with the latest climate science.

This validation marks a significant milestone in our sustainability journey and reflects our long-term commitment to operating responsibly, reducing our environmental impact and creating a more sustainable future for our clients, colleagues and communities.

As climate change continues to present challenges for businesses, communities and the environment, we recognise the importance of taking meaningful action. Achieving SBTi validation demonstrates that our emissions reduction plans are both ambitious and aligned with recognised scientific standards.

Our journey so far

Our carbon journey began in 2018 when we first started collecting and monitoring emissions data. Since then, we have continued to develop our understanding of our environmental impact and strengthen our commitment to reducing it.

Some of the key milestones along the way include:

  • Achieving ISO 14001 environmental management certification in 2015.
  • Beginning the collection of carbon emissions data in 2018.
  • Completing our first carbon emissions assessment covering Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions in 2020.
  • Developing our first full carbon inventory in 2024, including Scope 3 emissions and international operations.
  • Becoming a signatory to the Pledge to Net Zero in 2024.
  • Joining the United Nations Global Compact in 2025.
  • Achieving our renewable electricity objective, with 100% of purchased electricity sourced from verified renewable energy in 2025.
  • Successfully completing the assessment process and achieving SBTi target validation in 2026.

Why SBTi matters

The Science Based Targets initiative is widely recognised as the global benchmark for corporate climate target setting. It helps organisations establish emissions reduction targets that support the goals of the Paris Agreement and the ambition of limiting global warming to 1.5°C.

By achieving independent validation of our targets, we are demonstrating that our commitments are credible, measurable and grounded in climate science.

It is an important step in ensuring that sustainability continues to be embedded in the way we operate and deliver services across our business.

Our commitments

As part of our validated targets, we have committed to:

  • Reducing Scope 1 and Scope 2 greenhouse gas emissions by 25.2% by FY2030 against our FY2024 baseline.
  • Reducing Scope 3 greenhouse gas emissions by 48.0% per GBP value added by FY2030 against our FY2024 baseline.

To support these ambitions, we are continuing to:

  • Transition our fleet towards electric and ultra-low-emission vehicles.
  • Increase the use of renewable energy across the business.
  • Work closely with supply chain partners to reduce emissions and climate-related risks.
  • Improve procurement, logistics, transportation, business travel and employee commuting practices.

Monitor, report and continually improve our environmental performance.

Looking ahead

While achieving SBTi validation is a significant accomplishment, we know the real work lies ahead.

Our focus now is on delivering against our validated targets, continuing to reduce emissions across every part of the business and driving meaningful, measurable progress towards a lower-carbon future.

We believe that taking science-based action today will help us reduce our environmental impact while building a more sustainable future for our clients, colleagues and communities.

SBTi validation is not the finish line. It is another important milestone in our sustainability journey.
