The Government has made £343 million capital funding and £37.8 capability available for Tier 1 local authorities to plan and deliver electric vehicle (EV) charge points across the country. The Local Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (LEVI) Fund comprises:
- funding to support the delivery of EV charging points
- capability funding to ensure local authorities have enough staff to plan the strategy
To earn the funding, local authorities will have to submit a detailed strategy by Friday 26 May. This is to demonstrate how they will use the allocated amount.
Why should you focus on EV development?
The Government announced a ban on the sale of petrol and diesel cars by 2030. The UK electric vehicle infrastructure strategy highlights the need for all local authorities to have a strategy for the roll-out of infrastructure and the important role the public sector has in meeting the need for charge points in areas where households lack off-street parking. The transition to EVs will help local authorities meet their Net Zero targets and help tackling issues of poor air quality.
A lack of off-street parking is currently discouraging most residents from purchasing electric vehicles. The funding now available will support the delivery of EV charge points, encouraging more residents to make the purchase. London is already leading the way in the EV sector, and this strategy is looking to transform it into a net-zero carbon city.
