Project Centre was commissioned by London Borough of Barking and Dagenham to redesign Dagenham Avenue, to create an attractive and sustainable urban space to encourage more footfall. The site area had been split in two phases. The first (Heathway Gardens) to be delivered by early 2024. The second phase to be delivered by mid-2024.
A thorough urban analysis of the existing pedestrian movement, surrounding land use, space usage, landscape and desire line has been key in creating a contextual design. Considering the site is primarily surrounded by road, buffer zones have been created by appropriate planting following desire lines and existing landscape.
This also helps in increasing soft landscape as well as improved SUDs. A play area has been designed within the garden space to encourage different age group engagement and offer creative play space to the locals.
Additionally, several sustainable measures are also introduced in this project e.g., retention and
integration of all existing trees, reuse of paving material and furniture to minimise waste and reduce
costs, maximise use of porous surface to improve water management and promote biodiversity
enhancement by introducing a diverse planting palette.
